This is a photograph of my father's (Vincent Mannelli Sr.) first storefront on Broadway in Bethpage, NY, circa 1958. It was here that I first trained in the upholstery trade. I used to have to go to work with my father as punishment whenever I misbehaved—so I was there a lot!

My father sold this store in 1959 and moved first to Huntington, then East Northport, and finally to Northport. The store in Bethpage still exists today, although it has since relocated across the street.
Needless to say, I received my training at a very young age and have been involved in the craft for over 50 years. I couldn’t have had a better teacher. Dad was self-taught—an honest, hardworking craftsman who believed in the simple rule: underpromise and overdeliver. His lessons were invaluable and continue to live on in my work.
I went out on my own and opened The Furniture Hospital in 1971 in Northport. I later moved the business to Coram in 1973, where I remained for 42 years. After selling my building, I rebuilt and relocated the business to Patchogue.
